The Skittles Christmas Game (Easy Holiday Fun for All Ages)

Are you tired of watching your family retreat to their phones after Christmas dinner? The sound of scrolling and occasional grunts doesn’t exactly scream “festive cheer.”

But before you resort to breaking out that dusty Monopoly board (and risking another Property-Tax-induced family feud), let me introduce you to the Skittles Christmas game – where sugar meets shenanigans and even your Instagram-obsessed teen will have to look up.

Let’s get to it!

What You’ll Need to Play the Skittles Christmas Game

Before we dive in, let’s gather our supplies:

  • A bag of Skittles (the bigger, the better!)
  • A single, standard 6-sided die
  • A small red cup for each player
  • A printed copy of my Skittles Christmas Game action guide (you’ll want this handy!)
  • Holiday music playing in the background (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Your best festive spirit (absolutely required! ?)

Setting Up the Game

First things first, pour those rainbow-colored candies into individual cups – I recommend about 20 to 25 Skittles per person.

Oh, and keep some backup Skittles hidden away.

You’d be surprised how many “accidentally” get eaten before the game even starts!

The Color Code and Actions

Here’s where the magic happens.

Each Skittle color has 6 different possible actions.

When a player picks a Skittle, another player rolls a die to determine which of the six actions they’ll perform (fun right?).

This adds an extra element of surprise and keeps everyone on their toes – at least it does in my family.

Tip

If you want, you can print out a copy of the action sheet for each player and they can cross of the actions as they do them. Once they’ve done one action, they don’t have to repeat it. Sometimes doing this keeps the game fresh.

How to Play the Skittles Christmas Game

A-smiling-child-in-a-Christmas-sweater-laughs-out-loud-while-playing-the-Skittles-Christmas-Game-and-acting-as-a-swaying-Christmas-tree-in-a-family-activity.
  1. Gather everyone in a circle (preferably near the Christmas tree for maximum festive vibes)
  2. Each player takes turns picking a Skittle from their cup (NO PEEKING)
  3. The player to their left rolls the die to figure out which action number they’ll perform
  4. The player eats their Skittle and does the action.
  5. The group votes on how well they completed their task (thumbs up/down works great!)
  6. Keep going until all Skittles are gone or until everyone has had 2 to 3 turns. Ya know, whatever you decide.
HEADS UP!

If you’re digging this Skittles game, you’re going to lose your mind over my other Christmas crowd-pleasers. From a Christmas Lights Scavenger Hunt that’ll light up your night to a festive Guess Who twist that’ll make grandma giggle, and yes, even a Reindeer Poop Game (because I’m classy like that). Your holiday game collection needs these in its life.

Variations to Spice Things Up

So, I’ve discovered some fun twists to playing this game:

  • Team Challenge: Split into teams and earn points for particularly creative performances. My family uses a simple scoring system: 1 point for completing the action, and a bonus point if you make everyone laugh.
  • Speed Round: Set a timer for 30 seconds per action. Nothing gets the party going like watching Aunt Sarah try to “make up a new reindeer name and personality” while the countdown ticks away!
  • Chain Reaction: For an extra challenge, each performance must somehow connect to the previous one. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen someone try to link “acting out untangling Christmas lights” to “being a Christmas ornament on display”!

This game works brilliantly at Christmas parties because:

  • This quick and easy setup takes minutes
  • Rules are easy to understand
  • Everyone can participate easily
  • Creates plenty of laugh-out-loud moments
  • Perfect for all ages

Tips for Success

Let me share some wisdom earned from many (many) rounds of this game:

  • Keep the energy up: Have the action guide visible to everyone (we tape it to the wall) so players can get excited about potential combinations they might get.
  • Encourage creativity: Some of our most memorable moments have come from players putting their own spin on actions. Who knew there were so many different ways to “shine like a Christmas star”?
  • Make it inclusive: Feel free to modify actions for different age groups or abilities. We have a special “junior edition” set of actions for the really little ones.

The Perfect Time to Play

In my experience, this game works best after the big holiday meal has settled but before everyone slips into their food comas.

That sweet spot around 6 PM, when the kids are still wound up and the adults have had just enough eggnog to lower their inhibitions, is absolute perfection.
