Play the Guess Who Christmas Game for Holiday Family Fun
Let me tell you why Guess Who Christmas game is the best thing since candy canes.
Sure, there’s zillions of holiday party games out there, this one will have everyone crying with laughter – including your normally-wouldn’t-smile-if-you-paid-him Cousin Butch.
And here’s the kicker: This game is unbelievabely simple.
Even I can’t mess it up. And if I can nail this, anyone can! Shall we get started?
Getting Started with the Guess Who Christmas Game (You’ll Need Some Stuff…but NOT a lot of Stuff)

Before you dive into this festive face-off, let’s grab your supplies.
It’s way easier than assembling that “some assembly required” gift you might have got last year.
Essential Supplies:
- Santa hats for everyone ($1 each at Dollar Tree – your wallet can handle this)
- Double-sided tape (the real MVP of this game)
- Index cards (regular old cards, nothing fancy)
- Marker (preferably one that works, unlike that one in your drawer)
- Timer (your phone works fine, no need to dust off grandma’s egg timer)
Optional Fancy Stuff (for the overachievers among us):
- Printable game cards with pre-made categories
- Sample questions sheet (for those who struggle with yes/no concepts when they’re put on the spot)

| Game Objective | Time Limit | Question Types | “Winning” Criteria |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guess the identity on your hat the fastest | 1 minute per turn | Yes/No, “Could be,” | Most correct identity guesses OR everyone guesses their identity |
Setup Time: Honestly speaking, it’s easier than untangling Christmas lights
Setting up is a breeze, and I mean actually easy, not “easy” like those DIY Pinterest fails.
Here’s what you do:
- Get your supplies ready (see above list, my friend)
- Sort your cards into categories (or don’t – live dangerously)
- Arrange players in a circle (yes, like kindergarten)
- Stick cards on Santa hats (this is where that MVP double-sided tape comes in)
| Basic Kit | Pro Party Add-ons |
|---|---|
| Santa hats | Printable cards |
| Tape | Question sheet |
| Index cards | Holiday music |
| Marker | Festive snacks |
| Timer | Prize bag |
Use a “Cheer-O-Meter” soundtrack. Pump up holiday tunes as players guess. When someone’s close to cracking it, turn the volume up a notch. Missed it by a mile? Dial down the music so they know it’s not their shining moment.
Here’s the Thing – These Rules Are Actually Super Simple

And I mean that in the nicest way possible.
If someone like me – who once burned microwave popcorn three times in one day – can master this game, you’re definitely in safe territory.
Core Gameplay:
- Each player gets a mystery identity (stuck to their hat). Everyone can randomly pick a mystery identity for someone else and tape it to each other’s Santa hat. Or the host can do all the taping. It’s whatever floats your boat.
- The player whose turn it is, goes around in a circle asking the other players in the circle yes/no questions to figure out their mystery identity (only 60 seconds per turn, so be ready to think fast and have your questions mentally ready)
- You can make a guess if you’re feeling lucky.
- Wrong guess = turn over (womp womp) and then the next player repeats the process
- Keep playing until everyone has guessed their mystery identity. Or you can set a limit and say that the first 3 people who guess their identity win. Go with whatever you think your guests will like.
If you make the mystery identity cards, you can still play. Just shuffle the cards, have someone pick on of them and tape it to your Santa hat or do it yourself WITHOUT looking.
Here’s some sample yes or no questions that players can ask:
| Question | What It Helps Reveal |
|---|---|
| Am I a person? | Is it a character or an object? |
| Am I an animal? | Animal or not |
| Am I green? | Color clue (tree, Grinch, wreath) |
| Am I found in a Christmas movie? | Movie connection |
| Am I a decoration? | Object around the house |
| Do I give gifts? | Santa, Elf |
| Can I fly? | Reindeer, angel |
| Am I edible? | Cookie, candy cane |
| Am I made of snow? | Snowman, snowflake |
| Do I live at the North Pole? | Santa, Elf, Reindeer |
| Do people sing about me? | Song clue |
| Am I on the Christmas tree? | Ornament, star, angel |
| Do I light up? | Lights, star |
| Can I fit in a pocket? | Small items |
| Do I appear in a Christmas carol? | Musical origin |
| Am I sweet? | Dessert, candy |
| Am I popular all over the world? | Common characters |
| Do I wear a hat? | Santa, Elf, certain characters |
| Do I have four legs? | Animal clue |
| Am I animated? | Cartoon/movie origin |
Use these questions to quickly narrow down the possibilities and add some fun to your holiday game!

Your Turn
Be honest: who in your family would take this game way too seriously? Bonus points if it’s grandma. Let me knoow in the comments below.

I’m actually confused. who decides what card goes on your head? Does the person with card ask everyone a question or just one person? If I make the cards, do I not play?
Hi! Let’s see if I can help with that confusion. And I’m going to update the blog post to reflect what I say here. Everyone can randomly pick a mystery identity for someone else and tape it to each other’s Santa hat. Or the host can do all the taping. Whichever you’d prefer. If you make the cards, you can play. Just have someone else pick a mystery identity for you and tape it onto your hat OR choose one for yourself WITHOUT looking. That way you can still enjoy the game. =) Hope that helps!
