Materials:

  • Slips of paper
  • A bowl or a spooky hat to hold the slips

  • Painter’s tape or string

9. Pin the Wart on the Witch

Game Objective: To pin the wart as close to the witch’s pointy nose as possible while blindfolded, without making her look any more hideous than she already does.

Materials:

  • A large poster of a witch with a conspicuous wart-less nose (the bigger, the better).
  • Sticky warts (black felt circles with adhesive backing).
  • A blindfold (preferably one that looks like a bat flew into a thrift store and exploded).

Setup:

  • Create a post of a witch with a really big nose.  Remember, it’s not an art contest.
  • Hang the witch poster on a wall at kid-eye level.
  • Scatter the sticky warts nearby. Blindfold the first victimβ€”er, player.

Gameplay:

  • Spin the blindfolded player around a few times to disorient them.
  • Then, with the grace of a zombie trying to tap dance, they attempt to pin the wart on the witch’s nose.
  • Kids are going to fumble around, probably sticking warts on her chin, hat, or broomstick. It’s soooo funny!
Tip

You can always just cut out a few black circles from construction paper (or have a volunteer do it). Slap some tape on the back and you have some first-rate wart to use for the game).

11. Haunted Mystery Box

A-hand-reaches-into-a-spooky-mystery-box-decorated-with-cobwebs,-eye-stickers,-and-Halloween-lights,-perfect-for-low-prep,-easy-Halloween-games.

Oh, you think you’ve got nerves of steel? Let’s put that to the test with the Haunted Mystery Box. This game is not for the faint of heartβ€”or those who are squeamish about what they might touch.

Objective: Guess the mysterious and possibly gross items by touch alone.

Materials:

  • Boxes with lids (or deep bowls covered with cloth)
  • A variety of “creepy” items (cooked spaghetti for brains, peeled grapes for eyeballs, etc.)
  • Blindfolds (for the extra daring)

Setup:

  1. Place each creepy item into a separate box.
  2. Cut a small hole in the side or top, just big enough for a hand.

How to Play:

  • Blindfolded or not, players reach into the box and feel the item.
  • They must guess what they’re touchingβ€”no peeking allowed!
  • The player with the most correct guesses wins a spooky prize.
Tip

Chill the items beforehand to make them extra eerie. Trust me, cold spaghetti feels even more like brains.

12. Candy Corn Chopstick Relay

A-Halloween-themed-display-featuring-bowls-of-candy-corn-and-chopsticks-for-a-low-prep-candy-corn-chopstick-relay-game.

Objective: Show off your mad chopstick skills by transferring as many candy corns as possible in just 60 seconds.

Materials:

  • 2 bowls per team (because one bowl is for losers)
  • Candy corn (enough to fill one bowl per team, and maybe a few extras for snacking)
  • 1 pair of chopsticks per team (or twigs if you’re feeling extra rustic)

Setup:

  1. Fill one bowl per team with candy corn and place it on one end of the room. Watch out for sneaky snackers!
  2. Place the empty bowls on the other end of the room, far away from grabby hands.
  3. Distribute a pair of chopsticks to each team, making sure they’re not the flimsy kind that snap under pressure.

How to Play:

  • Players take turns wielding their chopsticks like samurai warriors, attempting to snatch candy corns and transfer them from the full bowl to the empty one.
  • Each player gets a measly 60 seconds to prove their dexterity before passing the chopsticks to the next victimβ€”I mean, player.
  • If a candy corn takes a nosedive, there’s no mercy! It must be rescued with the chopsticks, no cheating with your hands.
  • At the end of the chaos, the team with the most candy corns in their bowl reigns supreme. It’s not about the size of the corn, but the skill of the chop!

13. Glow-in-the-Dark Ghost Hunt

Materials:

  1. White paper or cloth

Setup:

  • Line up your teams and get ready to rock and roll with your apple-balancing skills.

How to Play:

  • The first player on each team puts the apple under their chin and gets ready to kick off this fruity adventure.
  • Without using their hands, they pass the apple to the next player in line. Keep it steady and keep it moving!
  • If the apple takes a tumble, it’s back to the start. No cheating allowedβ€”chin power only!
  • The first team to pass the apple all the way to the end of their line claims victory and earns the title of chin-up champions!

15. Zombie Walk a.k.a The Limping Dead Race

Objective: Complete an obstacle course while walking like a zombie.

Materials: Objects that can be used as obstacles (lawn chairs, cones, bicycles etc.)

Setup: Arrange objects in a course that players must navigate. This actually doesn’t take that long. I just start tossing things around. In 5 minutes or less, you’ve got an obstacle course worthy of the party that you’re about to throw.

Gameplay:

  • Walk like a zombieβ€”slow and limping. Make sure you demo (or have someone else do it) how you expect people to walk; otherwise you’ll have people cheating left and right
  • Players have to make their way through the course
  • The fastest time or last un-tagged zombie wins.

These games are perfect for adding some spooky fun to your party, and they’re so easy to set up that even the laziest of us can manage without breaking a sweatβ€”or a nail.

Tip

Mid-Game Twists: Introduce unexpected twists mid-game, like switching team members in the “Mummy Wrap Relay” or changing the rules slightly in “Eyeball Pong” to keep everyone on their toes.

17. Big Booooo: Spooky Sleuthing

Ready for a ghostly adventure? In this chilling game, one person leaves while the rest make a spooky change. Can you uncover the eerie mystery?

Objective:

One person leaves the spooky scene while the others make a scary change. When they return, they must figure out what’s different. The twist? The spooky sounds get louder as they get closer to the answer!

Materials:

  • None really
  • All you need is a room and some brave friends.

Setup:

Pick someone to leave the room. While they’re gone, everyone else makes a small change in the room. Be sneaky but not too scary!

How to Play the Game:

When the person comes back, they try to find the change while the others make spooky sounds. The closer they get to finding it, the louder the sounds get.

Tip

If you’re the one searching, take your time and look carefully. Sometimes, the smallest changes are the hardest to spot. And if you’re making the sounds, keep a straight faceβ€”you don’t want to give any clues!

Ways to Make the Game Easier: Limit where the change can be made or give a hint about what changed.

Ways to Make the Game Harder: Allow more changes or set a time limit to find the change.

Materials:

  • An orange balloon (to avoid any real pumpkin disasters)
  • A circle of friends or party-goers

Setup:

  1. Blow up the balloon and gather everyone in a circle.
  2. Decide if you’re playing with one balloon or making it extra challenging with multiple.

How to Play:

  • The balloon must be passed around the circle without using handsβ€”elbows, heads, and hips are fair game.
  • If the balloon hits the ground, the last two people to touch it are out.
  • Last one standing, or the last team, wins!
Tip

Play some fun music in the background to keep the energy up. It’s harder than it looks, especially if you’re laughing too hard to concentrate.

20. Eyeball Pong: Zombie Apocalypse Edition

Objective: Survive the zombie horde by bouncing “infected” eyeballs into toxic waste barrels to score points and save humanity.

Materials:

  • Large cups or buckets, stylized as toxic waste barrels
  • Optional: Blacklight to make those eyeballs really pop

Setup:

  • Position the toxic waste barrels in a chilling triangle formation at the end of a dimly lit table. If you’ve got a blacklight, now’s the time to let those eerie orbs glow.

Gameplay:

  • Players assume the role of last-standing survivors of a zombie apocalypse. The challenge? Take turns trying to bounce the infected eyeballs into the barrels.
  • Each barrel scores differently, with the farthest being the “high-risk, high-reward” zone. The closer barrels are your “safe bets,” but where’s the thrill in that?
  • Spice it up: Implement a rule where missing a shot requires you to draw a “Fate Card,” which could give you an advantage or unleash a new wave of challenges, like shooting with one eye closed or bouncing two balls at once.

Scoring:

  • Close-range barrel: 1 point
  • Mid-range barrel: 3 points
  • Farthest barrel: 5 points
  • Bonus for consecutive shots in different barrels: +2 points

  4. Draw spooky faces on your ghosts with the black marker.

How to Play:

  • Once everyone has made a few ghosts, use them for a game of hide and seek. Hide the ghosts around your party area.
  • Whoever finds the most ghosts gets to be the ghost master next round!

Creative Prize Ideas: Instead of standard trophies, think about fun, themed prizes. How about a spooky storybook, or a pumpkin carving kit for next year?

My Motto? Parties shouldn’t require a week’s worth of prep (or cleanup).

If your idea of party planning is more “wing it with style” than “schedule every second”, you’re my kind of people. Come for the laughs and good times, but stay for the goodies that make party planning a breeze (or at least less of a hurricane).

23. Pumpkin Crafting Station

Let’s get those creative juices flowing with a Pumpkin Crafting Station. It’s a decor-making session that doubles as a competitive game. Talk about multitasking!

Objective: Decorate pumpkins in the most creative or spooky way possible.

Materials:

  • Mini pumpkins (one for each participant)
  • Decorating supplies (markers, paint, glitter, stickers, etc.)

Setup:

  1. Set up a table with all the decorating supplies laid out.
  2. Give each participant a mini pumpkin.

How to Play:

  • Set a timer (15-20 minutes should do the trick).
  • Let everyone go wild decorating their pumpkin.
  • When the time’s up, have a panel of judges (or all the party-goers) vote on the best-decorated pumpkin.
Tip

Make sure to cover your crafting area with newspapers or a disposable tablecloth. Glitter and paint can get messy, and we want the scares to be fun, not permanent!

Tips for Hosting the Best Halloween Game Night

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of throwing a game night that’ll have even the ghosts talking.

With a sprinkle of creativity and a dash of planning, you’ll be on your way to hosting a bash that’s more treat than trick!

Keep the Games Flowing

First things first, variety is the spice of lifeβ€”and your party! Mix it up with a blend of games that cater to all ages and energy levels.

Have a few laid-back games like Halloween Charades for the chill crowd and some active ones like Zombie Freeze Dance for those who’ve had one too many candy corns.

Tip

Set a timer for each game to keep things moving. Trust me, nothing kills the vibe like a game that drags on longer than a vampire’s lifespan.

Prize Central

Who says you need to be a kid to love winning prizes? Have a stash of small, fun prizes for game winners. Think glow-in-the-dark bracelets, funky Halloween socks, or even a homemade trophy for bragging rights.

I went to a party years ago where the host made some sort of “Witch of the Night” trophy for the Halloween Costume Contest. Total. Hit.

And think she kept reusing year after year. It was such a hit that it’s now a coveted annual award. I mean, who knew a spray-painted broomstick could cause so much competition?

Safety Dance

Yes, we’re here to have a ghastly good time, but let’s not make it a real horror story.

Keep your play area free of trip hazards, especially if you’re planning on dimming the lights for ambiance.

And, if you’re including any games that involve small items, keep an eye out for the littlest kids.

Remember: A quick safety check can prevent any spooky accidents, so you can focus on having a frightfully fun night.

Wrapping It Up!

We’ve danced through the dos and don’ts of throwing a spooktacular Halloween game night. Now, it’s time to put on your capes, sharpen your fangs, and get ready to host a party that you’ll actually be able to enjoy.

What We’ve Learned:

  1. Mix It Up: Keep a variety of games ready to cater to all your ghostly guests.
  2. Prize Time: Everyone loves a good prize, so stock up on those fun little goodies.
  3. Safety First: A quick safety check ensures everyone has fun without any real scares.
