Slam Dice: The Game You Won’t Want to Put Down (Printable)

Ready for a laugh and a bit of competition rolled into one?

Let me introduce you to Slam Dice, the game that turned my game night from “meh” to “more, please!”

But hey, this isn’t just about my newfound obsession with rolling dice; it’s about you finding your next party hit.

Allow me to show you the ropes of Slam Dice, from the basic rules to some savvy gameplay tips.

Slam Dice Unveiled: Everyone’s New Favorite Dice Game

Bright-slam-dice-game-banner-stating-game-objective-to-avoid-being-the-last-to-score-fifteen-points-with-colorful-dice.

Playing Slam Dice is simple and exciting. You just need some dice, a cup for shaking them (if you’re feeling fancy), and friends ready for fun.

Objective

Don’t be the last person to reach a score of 15. When someone reaches 15 points, they’re out – or happily safe, as I call it, – and the game keeps going until there’s only one player left. The last person, who doesn’t hit 15, actually loses the game.

What You Need

You’ll need 3 regular dice and a score sheet  (I have a FREE printable SLAM DICE score sheet you can download below.)  This makes it easy to get everything ready to play.

Setting the Stage: Picking Your Slam Number

Before the dice start rolling, you’ve gotta set the stage by picking your slam number.

Just have someone toss a single die, and bam, you’ve got your slam number for the game.

Racking Up Those Points

Infographic-detailing-slam-dice-game-scoring-with-dice-showing-slam-number-three-for-single-small-and-grand-slams.

The name of the game is hitting that sweet 15 points using your shiny slam number.

Here’s how you can score:

  • Single Slam: Roll your dice, and if one of them shows the slam number, you’ve just scored yourself 1 point.
  • Small Slam: Got two dice showing the slam number? That’s a Small Slam right there, padding your score with a juicy 5 points.
  • Grand Slam: Hit the jackpot with all three dice showing the slam number, and you’ve landed a Grand Slam. This baby brings home 15 points in one go.

Let the Games Begin

  1. Find the Slam Number: Start by rolling one die to set the game’s target number.
  2. Take Turns Rolling: Players take turns rolling all three dice.
  3. Score Points: You score by rolling the Slam number on any dice.
  4. Get Combo Points: If you roll the Slam number on more than one die or get certain combos, you score extra points.
  5. Track Scores: Use the score sheet to keep track of everyone’s points.
  6. Twist in the Game: When someone reaches 15 points, they’re out, and the game keeps going until there’s only one player left. The last person, who doesn’t hit 15, actually loses, making you think about your strategy.

When it’s your turn, give those three dice a good roll and see where they land.

  • Score a Single or Small Slam? Add those points and roll again. Keep the good times rolling!
  • Miss the slam number entirely? Looks like it’s the next player’s turn. No points for you. Better luck next time!
  • Roll a Grand Slam? Congratulations, you’ve just hit the 15-point jackpot! Sit back, relax, and enjoy your victory lap.

The game keeps spinning until there’s only one person left standing without those coveted 15 points.

So, the goal is clear: don’t be the last one rolling. The last player who hasn’t hit the 15-point mark?

Well, they get the “honor” of being the game’s loser.

Twisting the Dice: Slam Game Variants

Ever felt like Slam Dice was fun but needed a bit more pizzazz? Say no more!

Let’s dig into some other ways to play that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat.

Let’s kick off with the “Ditch the Dice –  your secret weapon to leapfrog the competition.

Ditch the Dice

This variant really only comes into play when you have someone about to score 15 points

Just adjust the dice that you roll based on your score.  If you have a score of 10+, then roll two dice – because more than likely, 3 dice will give you a bigger number than you need to score 15.

If you have a score of 13 or 14, then just choose to roll 1 die.

You’re also more likely to end up with 15 points in that scenario.

Then there’s the “Big Number Slam,” where it’s go big or go home.

This one’s all about rolling those hefty numbers – 4, 5, and 6. Nail this combo, and you snag a point every time.

Slam Dice: Challenge-Style

  1. Setting the Stage: Still pick your slam number with a single dice roll, but this time, let’s add a little flair. The person rolling the die must wear the “Crown of Chance” – a ridiculously oversized, sparkly hat that screams, “I’m the king/queen of luck!”
  2. Racking Up Those Points: The rules are the same, but with added excitement:
    • Single Slam: Congrats! Now, do a victory dance or face a fun penalty, like talking in rhymes until your next turn.
    • Small Slam: Whoa, 5 points! Now, choose a player to do a funny challenge, like imitating a famous celebrity until the next round.
    • Grand Slam: Hit the 15-point jackpot? You’re the Slam King/Queen! Wear the Crown of Chance until someone else scores a Grand Slam.

Rolling in the Dough: Slamming for Cash

Ready to up the ante? Throw some cash into the mix. Everyone chips in to create a jackpot that could be yours if you’re the first to rack up 15 points. It’s Slam as you know it but with higher stakes.  All the other rules in the original game

Rookie Moves to Dodge in Slam

Jumping into Slam is a blast, but a few missteps can really mess you up. Keep an eye out for these rookie blunders:

  • Skipping over the slam number set by the opener? Big mistake. That number’s your golden ticket to racking up points.
  • Clueless about different slams’ point values? You’re setting yourself up for a scoreboard mess. Brush up on those numbers; it’s important.
  • Getting too caught up in the heat? Remember, it’s all in good fun. Keep the competition friendly, and the game stays enjoyable.
  • Losing track of scores? That’s a recipe for confusion. Keep your math sharp and your scorekeeping sharper.
  • Diving in without knowing the ropes? Take a beat to learn the ins and outs. A little homework makes your Slam experience a whole lot better.

Steer clear of these slip-ups, and you’re not just in for a great time; you’re setting yourself up as a Slam champ in the making!

Let’s dive into the fun and not-so-fun parts of Slam Dice, shall we? This game could be the highlight of your next hangout, but it’s got its quirks.

So, here’s the lowdown, straight from someone who’s been there, rolled that.  Here’s a quick look:

ProsCons
Fast-paced and engaging for all ages – even my 6-year-old nephew gets a kick out of it!One definite loser, which can be a bummer. (Pro tip: Play a few rounds and rotate the loser to keep things fair!)
You only need three regular dice to play, so it’s easy to get started. It can get repetitive after several rounds. (My creative tip: Add some silly consequences or dares for the loser to keep everyone laughing.)
There are cool variations like Small Slam and Big Number Slam to keep things interesting.Strategies are limited, so it’s more about luck than skill.
It’s free to play if you download the score sheets and instructions.Playing for money might not be a good idea, especially if kids are involved.
You can add some excitement by playing for money (but keep it family-friendly, of course). You’ll need to supervise if youngsters are playing, particularly when money’s on the line.

Other Quick and Easy Dice Games to Play

Okay, Slam Dice is pretty fun. But, there’s no need to limit yourself to just one dice game. Mix it up a little bit.

Here’s some game suggestions for you to consider:

PIG

Roll a single die, and rack up points, aiming to hit exactly 100. But watch out! Roll a 1, and you lose all your points for that turn. Want to keep your points safe? End your turn before the dice betray you. It’s all about knowing when to stop before you pig out on points and lose them all.

Chicago Dice

Chicago Dice is basically the road trip of dice games – you’re hitting 11 different stops (rounds), each with its own goal. From scoring the lowest to nailing a straight, it’s your chance to show off your dice-rolling skills. Think of it as a scenic route through the land of luck and strategy.

Farkle

Get ready to roll six dice, hunting for scoring combos like 1s, 5s, three of a kind, and so on. No luck on a roll? That’s a Farkle, and you lose your points for the round. The trick is deciding whether to bank your points or risk them for a bigger score. It’s the ultimate gamble on the go.

Ship, Captain, Crew

With Ship, Captain, Crew, you’ve got three dice rolls to assemble your crew in order: a 6 (ship), a 5 (captain), and a 4 (crew). The remaining two dice? They’re your cargo, and the higher the better. Fail to roll your ship, captain, and crew in order, and it’s a lost voyage. It’s like building your dream team, but with dice.
