How to Play the Rollercoaster Dice Game: A Step-by-Step Guide

Let’s get you squared away, so you can dive into this slice of game night gold.

I’m going to take your through the objectives, materials, how to play, and other handy things you’ll need to have a great time playing it.

Object of the Game

In Roller Coaster, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to roll the dice fast and furiously to try to hit a number 1

But, you have to avoid ending up with both dice in front of you at the same time.  It’s like musical chairs, but with dice.

What You’ll Need

  • Dice: Two six-sided warriors ready for battle.
  • Players: An awesome squad of 4 or more. I’ve found 6 to 8 people is the sweet spot—enough to keep things interesting, but not so many that you lose the dice under someone’s chair.

The Rules of the Roller Coaster Dice Game Ride

Now, let’s dive into the rules of this exhilarating game:

  1. Start by giving one die to a player and the other to the player across from them.
  2. These two players will rapidly roll their dice simultaneously.
  3. If a player rolls a 1, they can quickly pass their die to the player on their left.  And I do mean quickly.
  4. The passing continues around the table until one die catches up with the other.
  5. The player who ends up with both dice is eliminated from the game. (I’ve been that unlucky soul more times than I can count. ?)
  6. Rinse and repeat.
  7. When there’s three players left, whoever didn’t start with a dice gets to feel a bit smug. They’re the one who passed off their problem (i.e., the second die) to eliminate player four.
  8. The game continues in rounds, with new players starting each round until only one player remains. That last player standing is the winner!
Tip

Keep your eyes peeled and your reflexes sharp! The faster you can pass that die, the better your chances of survival.

Winning the Roller Coaster Dice Game

You want to be the last one standing? Here are some “strategies” that have helped me…well, at least once.

  • Be the Flash: Roll quick, pass quicker – that’s if you’re going to avoid getting stuck with both dice.
  • Eyes Wide Open: Watch the game like a hawk… or like you’re binge-watching your favorite series. Knowing who’s quick and who fumbles can be your ticket to victory.
  • Cool as a Cucumber: The more people get knocked out, the tenser it gets. Try to stay chill. I tell myself it’s just a game, but we all know it’s a battle for glory.
  • Enjoy the Ride: Roller Coaster is about fun and the sheer unpredictability of dice. Laugh off the losses, and if you win, try not to rub it in too much. I learned that the hard way.

Things You Can Do If You Get Elminated from the Game

Getting booted from the game doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. Here are ten things you can do to keep the good times rolling, whether you’re a grown-up or not quite there yet:

  1. Become the Hype Person: Cheer on the players still in the game. Make it loud, make it proud, and maybe just a tiny bit obnoxious for laughs.
  2. Snack Attack: Elimination is the perfect excuse to hit up the snack table. Go on, you’ve earned those chips. Plus, you can always bring some back for the players still in the game (they’ll love you for it).
  3. Photographer for the Day: Whip out your phone and capture the intense game moments. Bonus points for hilarious action shots or candid expressions of despair and triumph.
  4. Strategize for Next Time: Watch the game closely and pick up tips and tricks for your next go-round. It’s like being a spy, but with less danger and more dice.
  5. Commentator Extraordinaire: Provide a running commentary of the game. Think of it as your audition for a sports announcer gig. The more dramatic, the better.
  6. Dice Roller Trainer: Offer to help the younger or less experienced players with their dice-rolling technique. Show them the wrist flick or the shake-and-bake method.
  7. Master of Ceremonies: Take control of the music and set the soundtrack for the game. Every epic battle needs an epic soundtrack, right?
  8. Quick Sketch Artist: Grab a pencil and paper and start sketching scenes from the game or caricatures of the players. It’s a fun way to capture the moment and show off your artistic side (even if stick figures are as good as it gets).
  9. The Peacekeeper: Keep an eye out for any disputes or confusion over the rules and be ready to jump in as the calm, collected voice of reason. Every game needs its referee, after all.
  10. Plan the Next Game: Start thinking about what game to play next. Maybe flip through the options and get everyone excited for round two of game night.

Other Dice Games for the Easily Amused

Because variety is the spice of life (or so I’m told), here are a few other dice games to play when Roller Coaster has left you dizzy.

Pig: Roll your way to a specific points total but roll a one, and you’ll lose everything. It’s a bit like life, really.

50 Dice Game: Race to 50 points, but double dice rolls reset your score. It’s like two steps forward, a million steps back. I once was one roll away from winning. Then I rolled doubles. Twice.

Left Center Right (LCR): Roll three dice to determine where your chips go. Last one with chips wins. It’s a bit like playing hot potato, but with more dire consequences. My chips always seem to prefer anyone but me.

Drop Dead: Roll five dice, avoid rolling a 5 or a 2. Save your scores or risk it all for more points? You decide.
