Liar’s Dice: Bluff, Bid, and Bond Your Way Through Game Night

Liar’s Dice is an age-old dice game where your poker face gets a workout, and you realize how bad you are at keeping a straight face. It’s the perfect mix of strategy, luck, and, well, a bit of cheeky deception.

If you’ve ever wanted to convince your friends (or your family) you’re a mastermind of bluffing—or just want to have a good laugh while rolling some dice—then buckle up. This game’s hilarious!

Learning how to play Liar’s Dice is easy and it’ll have you and your crew hooked in no time.

So gather your fellow gamers, sharpen your wits, and get ready to outsmart your opponents in this thrilling game of chance and strategy.

Let the dice rolling begin!

Objective (What You Want)

The objective of Liar’s Dice is to be the last player remaining with dice by outbidding, outbluffing, and outplaying your opponents.

Be the sneaky, cunning player who outlasts everyone else. Or at least, don’t be the first to lose all your dice.

The Catch: You’ve got to guess how many dice of a certain number are under everyone’s cups. You’re trying to read minds, without actually reading minds.

Laying Out the Game: Materials and Setup Without the Sweat

  • Have What You Need: Make sure you have a group of people who’re ready to bring their A-game to the bluffing deparments.  You’ll also need 5 six-sided dice for each player and a cup they can use to hide their dice.
  • Dice Distribution: Hand out those cups and dice like you’re the dealer in a high-stakes poker game. Each player gets their own set.
  • Designate the Arena: Make sure there’s enough elbow room. You don’t want to accidentally elbow someone when you’re about to reveal your master bluff.
  • Choosing the First Player: Rock, Paper, Scissors, anyone? Or maybe whoever can touch their nose with their tongue. Get creative.
Tip

Keep an eye on…EVERYONE. People’s faces sometimes tell you more than their words do. I once caught someone’s triumphant smirk right before they bluffed. Let’s just say, their poker face needed work.

How to Play Liar’s Dice: The Art of Bidding and Bluffing

Liar’s dice about reading your opponents and pulling off some clever bluffs.

This game can get pretty intense – especially if you really get into it.

Now, here’s how it goes down:

  1. Everyone rolls their dice secretly, examines the dice they rolled, and keeps them hidden under their cups. No peeking at other players’ dice.
  2. The first player starts the bidding by making a claim about the total number of a specific value on everyone’s dice.
  3. A bid has two parts: the quanitity of dice and the face value.  Like, “I think there’s 4 threes out there in total.”  This means that the bidder believes there’s at least 4 dice showing the number three across all players’ cups.
  4. Now, here’s where the fun begins!  Moving clockwise, the next player has two options:
    • Raise the bid: By increasing the amount, the face value, or both. For instance, if the previous bid was “three fours,” you could raise it to “four fours” or “three fives.” “4 threes? Nah, I’m betting on 5 fours!”
    • Challenge the bid: If you think the bidder is bluffing, you can call their bluff by saying “Liar!” or “I challenge!” (Get ready for some dramatic reveals!)
  5. If someone gets called out, it’s time for the moment of truth. Everyone lifts their cups and shows their dice. If the bidder was spot-on, they win the round. If not, the challenger takes the victory.
  6. The losing player has to sacrifice one of their precious dice
  7. Keep the rounds going until there’s only one player left with dice. That’s the winner.

There’s actually two types of Liar’s Dice games you can play. Single hand where each player has a set of dice, all rolled at the same time, and “Common Hand” where one set of dice is shared with each player. Single hand is much more popular.

Revealing the Truth

When a bid is challenged, all players must reveal their dice. If the bid was accurate (or exceeded), the challenger loses one of their dice. However, if the bid was a bluff, the bidder loses a die instead.

  • If a player loses their last die, they’re out of the game.
  • The player who lost a die starts the next round with the first bid.
  • Play continues clockwise until only one player with dice remains – and that’s the winner!
Tip

Pay attention to the revealed dice throughout the game. It’ll give you a better idea of what’s left and help you make more informed bids or challenges.

Variations and House Rules

Like any classic game, Liar’s Dice has its fair share of variations and house rules. Here are a few popular ones:

  • Wild Ones: In some games, the number one is considered a wild card and can represent any face value.
  • Common Hand: Instead of each player having their own set of dice, there’s a single set that gets passed around. Players can re-roll some or all of the dice before making their bid.
  • Spot On: If a player thinks the bid is exactly correct, they can call “Spot On!” instead of challenging. If they’re right, everyone else loses a die (ouch!).

Winning at Liar’s Dice: Not as Easy as You’d Think

Ever dived into a game of Liar’s Dice, thinking you’re about to become the grandmaster, only to find out your poker face is more of a giveaway face? Yeah, me too.

But don’t worry, I’ve picked up a trick or two (mostly by doing the exact opposite of what works).

Let’s talk strategies and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get through a game night without giving away our bluffs by giggling.

Mastering the Art of “I Totally Have What I’m Claiming I Have”

  • Bluffing: Ah, the heart and soul of Liar’s Dice. If you can make your friends believe you’ve got a hand full of sixes with the confidence of someone who’s done their taxes early, you’re on the right track. My go-to move? Boldly declaring something so crazy, it just might work. Or it lands me in immediate defeat, but who’s counting?
  • Reading the Room: This is where you look for those little tells. Is your friend biting their lip? Did someone’s eyebrow just twitch? I once thought I saw a tell, but it turned out my friend just had something in their eye. Watch out for false alarms.

Dice Roll Management: A Fancy Way of Saying “Guess and Hope”

  • What to Show and What to Hide: You want to reveal just enough to be interesting but keep your ace in the hole hidden. With dice, it’s more about not letting everyone know you’re only rolling ones and twos.
  • Playing the Odds: I like to think I’m good at math, but then Liar’s Dice shows me I’m really good at…creative guessing. Keeping track of which numbers are getting called can help you bluff better or call someone else’s bluff. It’s a bit like trying to remember where you left your house keys, but with dice.

Rolling with the Punches: Adapting Your Master Plan

Here’s the thing about Liar’s Dice: no matter how solid your strategy, sometimes you just have to wing it. That’s part of the fun, right? Right?! So when your well-laid plans go south, remember:

  • Every round is a new chance to either dazzle or be completely confused.
  • Bluffing and calling bluffs is part art, part luck, and mostly just hoping for the best.

In the grand scheme of things, whether you triumph in Liar’s Dice or not doesn’t matter (or so I tell myself after a huge loss).

It’s about those moments of sheer panic when someone calls your bluff, and you have to keep a straight face.

So, roll those dice with confidence, keep your bluffs believable (or hilariously unbelievable), and let the good times roll.

Alright, let’s dive into some tips to make your Liar’s Dice game night a blast for the whole family! ??

  • Bring on the rainbow of dice. Using colorful dice sets can really liven up the game, especially for the little ones. I’ve seen my fair share of kids’ eyes light up when they get to roll those vibrant dice.
  • Embrace the silly with funny consequences. When someone gets caught bluffing, take one of their die AND make them do something hilarious? You can make them do a goofy dance, speak in a funny accent, etc. In my experience, the sillier the consequence, the better.
  • Team up for extra fun! Liar’s Dice is usually an individual game, but why not switch things up and add some team rounds? Pair up players from different generations or create family teams. It’s a great way to bond and strategize together.

These challenges aren’t just for family game nights – they can be an awesome way to mix up adults-only Liar’s Dice games too.

Adding these penalties can take your game from ordinary to extraordinary, no matter who you’re playing with. It keeps everyone engaged, laughing, and having a great time.

Tip

Before starting Liar’s Dice, give the players slips of paper and have them right down 5 “penalty” challenges to be used during the game.  Toss them all into a hat or a bowl.  Then use them as needed during the game.

  • Dice 10000 (Farkle’s cousin): Chase 10,000 points with 6 dice. Roll, keep scoring dice (like 1s, 5s, or triples) aside, and choose to risk it all for more points or secure your score. But watch out – rolling non-scorers means lose your points for that turn. First to hit 10,000 points wins.
  • LCR (Left, Center, Right): In a circle, roll three special dice to see where your chips go: left, center, or right. Hang onto your chips to win.
